With Softbank on board, Bango strengthens carrier billing payments in Japan

Mobile commerce provider Bango has added Softbank Corp. customers to its list of Japanese mobile phone carriers whose customers can now make purchases in their Amazon accounts and charge the cost to their phone bill.

In the arrangement with Softbank, customers with a mobile phone account can now pay for goods, membership fees, subscription services and Amazon Japan purchases through Bango's integration with the mobile phone bill.

U.K.-based Bango now powers carrier billing for Amazon across Japan's three largest mobile operators in adding Softbank to NTT Docomo and KDDI. Citing Statista data from 2020, Bango says Japan has 177 million subscriptions for various digital services, making it one of the most highly penetrated mobile markets in the world.

"Bango technology has ensured that our customers can enjoy a simple and successful way to buy on Amazon," Toshiaki Hirata, a board director, senior vice president and chief sales officer for Softbank unit SB Payment Service Corp., said in a Monday press release. "We look forward to benefiting from Bango data insights to accelerate the growth of our new business."

Carrier billing enables customers to make purchases instantly, without the need to enter card details online. Bango says its service provides an effective way to acquire, monetize and engage customers through technology that ensures payment reliability and security.

"Japan's high spending population leads the world in mobile commerce," Paul Larbey, Bango's CEO, said in the release. "Charging the cost of goods to the phone bill is a widely adopted payment method, with billions of dollars in online purchases charged to Japanese phone bills."
