VeriFone is introducing its sound-based mobile app for proximity payments, Way2ride, to taxi passengers in Philadelphia.
Way2ride will be available in 1,400 of the 1,600 taxis currently operating in the city, the company says in a June 17 press release. Passengers can download the Way2ride app, pre-load payment information and preferred tip amounts, then use the app to pay and immediately receive a receipt via email.

The launch of Way2ride in Philadelphia follows a successful deployment in New York, says Amos Tamam, senior vice president of taxi systems for VeriFone, in the release. Since its debut in October 2013, Way2ride has been accepted by more than 11,000 yellow taxis and green borough taxis in New York facilitating more than 500,000 mobile transactions.
After the Philadelphia launch, VeriFone plans to further expand Way2ride acceptance throughout its network of more than 70,000 payment-enabled taxis worldwide, it says.
