UnionPay Mobile Payments Arrive in Canada

China UnionPay has launched its NFC-based QuickPass mobile payment system in Canada, marking its first acceptance by merchants in North America.

UnionPay’s mobile QuickPass already is accepted at more than 220,000 point of sale terminals in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Australia, UnionPay said in an Aug. 16 press release.

Canadian merchants initially accepting UnionPay QuickPass include restaurants, hotels, retail outlets, supermarkets and convenience stores, and no signature is required for transactions under 100 CAD (US$77), UnionPay said in the release. Consumers may pay at participating merchants with their UnionPay QuickPass EMV card or mobile QuickPass-enabled smartphone at merchants with NFC, the company added.

More than 2 billion UnionPay-branded chip cards are currently in circulation, and more than 7 million point of sale terminals worldwide support mobile QuickPass, the company said.
