Tesco launches mobile payment app at all U.K. stores

U.K. supermarket giant Tesco has long supported Apple Pay at its contactless-enabled checkout locations, and now it also supports mobile payments through a proprietary app it’s rolled out to its nearly 7,000 stores.

Tesco’s new PayQwiq mobile app enables customers to link any credit or debit card and pay by scanning a bar code instead of dipping a payment card at the point of sale, Tesco said in a Jan. 23 press release.

Customers may use PayQwiq for any single transaction up to £250 (US$311), and automatically earn Clubcard loyalty points, Tesco said in the release. Users may link the app to up to two separate handsets, Tesco explained on its website.

“PayQwiq offers customers a simple, convenient and secure way to pay that helps them save time at the checkout and collect Clubcard points with one simple scan of their smartphone,” said Mark Loch, Tesco’s digital wallet and group payments strategy director, in the release.

Tesco also supports redemption of digital coupons with the PayQwiq app, but to redeem physical coupons, users must still swipe their physical Clubcard to redeem coupons before checking out with PayQwiq, according to the company’s website.

To drive usage, Tesco is offering 50 extra Clubcard points for the first 10 PayQwiq transactions through the first week of May, the company said in the press release.
