Target pins Sunday payment outage on NCR

One of Target's high-profile payment outages this weekend stemmed from a problem at one of NCR's data centers, the big box retailer says.

Target suffered two outages — one on Saturday that lasted about two hours that Target attributed to an internal issue, and one on Sunday that Target initially blamed on a data problem at a third party payment vendor. On Monday it named NCR as that vendor.

"LIke many other companies, Target uses NCR as a vendor to help accept payments and Sunday afternoon NCR experienced an issue at one of their data centers," Target's PR office said in an email. "While this was not an issue with Target's technology system, Target was unable to process select card payments for about 90 minutes."

NCR did not return a request for comment on Monday afternoon. Target's email said the issue is resolved and payments are going through normally.

On Sunday, multiple media outlets reported long lines and complaints at Target stores, which partly relied on cash payments as a fallback for cards, though Target's mobile app also reportedly served as a workaround for card payments for in-store pickups.

Target did not disclose the scope of the outages, such as how many stores were affected or how many payments did not go through.
