Samsung enters licensing deal for fingerprint software

Samsung Electronics has entered a commercial software license and distribution agreement with fingerprint software company Precise Biometrics.

Samsung's large-scale integration business unit plans to use the Swedish company's BioMatch Mobile solution for fingerprint recognition in mobile phones and tablets, which will "provide the best user experience and security of their fingerprint solutions, as they enter the market for fingerprint sensors," Håkan Persson, chief executive of Precise Biometrics, said in a Nov. 8 news release.

The agreement with Samsung's large-scale system integration business includes an annual fee for support and maintenance and a per-unit license fee, which is volume dependent and can't currently be forecasted, Precise Biometrics said in the release.

Samsung introduced Samsung Pay in fall 2015 and has since sought to strengthen its biometric security features as it grows the offering and strives to build a core ecosystem with banks. The Korean electronics giant introduced biometrics in its Galaxy S5 phones in February 2014 to let Samsung customers use fingerprints to shop with PayPal merchants.
