PNC adds digital, mobile payments to commercial cards

PNC is approaching corporate clients with new non-plastic card options including Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay.

The move makes PNC an early adopter of mobile wallets for corporate travel-related and in-store purchases among U.S. banks. The bank is responding to what it sees as a demographic shift among workers.

PNC uses a virtual account number via Visa's token service to avoid storing commercial card numbers on users' mobile devices, alongside two-step identification and verification for users when adding commercial cards.

Mobile payments have been slow to develop for corporate cards, though activity is starting to pick up. U.S. Bank in May enabled third-party wallets for Visa corporate cardholders.

"Businesses recognize the growing need to make payments fit the new 'digital first' lifestyle of their corporate cardholders," said Vicky Bindra, global head of products and solutions for Visa, in a June 19 press release.
