More than a year after leaving a top post at iPayment Inc., Philip Ragona is returning to serve the payments processor with new responsibilities.

Ragona has been named executive vice president and general counsel, and he will also serve on the company’s management committee, Westlake Village, Calif.-based iPayment said in a Jan. 9 press release.

Ragona, who has 20 years of legal experience, was iPayment’s senior vice president and general counsel from April 2012 through May 2015, when he left to take a top position at Light Science Group, which provides LED lighting. In the interim, iPayment underwent a repositioning to refine the company’s leadership and expand its product lines, and those moves drew Ragona back to the company, he said in the release.

“The General Counsel position was the last key hire we needed to round out our leadership team and management committee,” said O.B. Rawls IV, iPayments’ CEO, in the release.

The job of legal counsel had been an open position, and Ragona will take on broader duties with his new role, an iPayments spokesperson said. iPayments provides payment and processing solutions for 150,000 U.S.-based small- and midsize businesses.
