i2c, Ecard collaborate on cross-border travel card

Card processor i2C Inc. has formed an alliance with Ecard, a prepaid debit card targeting travelers that's accepted on both Discover and China’s UnionPay network.

The move will streamline Ecard’s account onboarding process and user access to UnionPay's rewards programs via i2C’s platform, according to a Tuesday press release.

New York-based Global Bank began issuing Ecard early this year, primarily targeting international students and other visitors traveling between the U.S. and China, enabling them to make purchases at any UnionPay or Discover Network merchant and withdraw cash at thousands of ATMs around the world.

Ecard users may shop and withdraw cash in the U.S. using surcharge-free ATMs connected to the SUM Network. There is 1.49% transaction free for purchases and ATM withdrawals outside the U.S., the release said.

“We’re excited about partnering with Ecard to provide a seamless cardholder payment experience to their customers who travel from the U.S. and make card purchases or withdrawals at ATMs,” said Amir Wain, i2C’s founder and CEO, in the release.

“i2c’s UnionPay certification and core capabilities give us everything we are looking for to help us scale our programs worldwide,” added Wayne Tsao, Ecard’s CEO, in the release.
