A British cardholder has lost his lawsuit against Halifax PLC that claimed the bank was liable for eight ATM withdrawals he says were unauthorized. The man, Alain Job, had a chip-and-PIN card. Despite the fraud protections on such cards, Job claimed "phantom withdrawals" were made at ATMs, resulting in losses of 2,100 UK pounds (US$3,360 or 2,400 euros). Job reportedly claimed his ATM card was cloned using data from the card's magnetic stripe. Neither Job nor his attorney could be reached for comment about Thursday's ruling. Halifax offered no immediate comment. Some UK press reports framed the case as a trial of the security of chip-and-PIN. APACS, a UK group that represents issuers, declined to do the same. A group spokesperson tells CardLine Global the judge's ruling framed the case more as a relatively simple consumer dispute.
