GrabPay hires former Visa exec to oversee expansion

Ride service and mobile payments provider GrabPay has hired Ooi Huey Tyng, a former Visa executive with more than 25 years of experience in banking and payments, as managing director of Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Huey Tyng joins Singapore-based Grab after serving as country manager of Singapore for Visa and leading the company's innovation and digital advancements with regional banks. Prior to her work at Visa, she held leadership roles at DBS, UOB and Citi, among others, where she was responsible for managing retail cards businesses, co-branding and rewards partnerships.

At the close of 2017, GrabPay said it added 1,000 merchants in Singapore to the mobile platform, and Huey Tyng will focus on the more than 20,000 local, cash-based merchants who could benefit from going cashless.

“Huey Tyng brings deep leadership expertise from some of the region’s premier banks and payments providers," Jason Thompson, managing director of GrabPay Southeast Asia, said in the release.

"Her experience with our current and potential payments partners will be invaluable as GrabPay moves into its next phase of growth," Thompson added. "Millions of people in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines are still heavily dependent on cash."

The Grab platform for ride service and retail mobile payments handles more than 3.5 million transactions daily, the company said.
