German Drugstore Chain To Deploy 5,000 Hypercom Terminals

Dirk Rossmann GmbH, a German drugstore chain, is deploying 5,000 Hypercom Corp. Artema Hybrid payment terminals in more than 1,000 locations throughout Germany, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based point-of-sale terminal maker announced Tuesday.

Other merchants earlier deployed some 250,000 Artema Hybrid terminals in Germany, according to Hypercom.

The companies did not disclose the financial details of the agreement.

“Germany is the headquarters for Hypercom’s northern European operations, and it is an important market for Hypercom,” says a Hypercom spokesperson.

One reason the product is popular in Germany is because it is “designed for special requirements in a fast, multilane environment,” says the spokesperson. The terminal includes a single slot that accepts both chip-and-PIN and magnetic stripe cards.

Other types of German merchants using the terminal include general merchandise and discount retailers, supermarkets, automobile dealerships, clothing shops, and pet-supply stores, says the spokesperson, who declined to name specific merchants.

The terminal deployment began two weeks ago, and Dirk Rossmann expects to complete the rollout by mid-2011. Dirk Rossmann is the third-largest drugstore chain in Germany, with 1,530 locations.
