France’s Orange Bank, the online bank launched in 2017 by telco Orange, is expanding its mobile payment app’s reach by adding Google Pay through an integration via Wirecard.
Orange Bank customers with Android devices may use their smartphones to pay online or at any NFC-enabled merchant through Orange’s app, Wirecard said in a Wednesday press release.
Users unlock their device to authorize contactless payments. The Orange mobile payment app also supports real-time P2P transfers via SMS messaging, according to the release.
Last year Orange Bank accounted for nearly one in five mobile payments conducted in France, the bank said. Orange expects 200,000 Android users to activate Google Pay via Orange Bank, out of a total of 500,000 customers, the release said.
“Together with Orange Bank, we are continuing to make our vision of a cashless society a reality. France in particular is a very interesting market, as the adoption rate in the mobile banking sector is already very high there,” said Philippe Laranjeiro, Wirecard’s head of sales, digital and telco, in the release.
