EBay Joins FIDO Alliance as First E-Commerce Member

EBay has become a member of the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, making it the first e-commerce company to achieve FIDO certification.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company also announced Tuesday that it has launched a FIDO-certified open source authentication server that uses the FIDO UAF protocol.

PayPal, a former unit of eBay, is a founding member of FIDO and supports FIDO standards in its own technology.

FIDO welcomed the addition of eBay, noting that its membership will help leverage open authentication standards in commerce.

"By joining the Alliance and launching its open source implementations, eBay is showing clear innovation leadership as it positions web and mobile commerce globally for broad-scale deployment of industry standard FIDO authentication," FIDO Alliance executive director Brett McDowell said in a news release.

Created in 2012, the FIDO Alliance works to improve interoperability among authentication technologies to enable simple alternatives to passwords. The FIDO Alliance Board of Directors includes major financial services and technology companies such as Alibaba, American Express, Bank of America, MasterCard, Microsoft and Visa.
