China's Huawei Pay goes live in Russia

Nearly a year after Chinese phone maker Huawei announced plans to expand Huawei Pay internationally, the mobile payment service has gone live in Russia, its first foreign market.

The move builds on a global cooperation agreement Huawei signed with UnionPay in January 2018, extending Huawei Pay to UnionPay customers outside of China.

Through partnerships with Moscow-based financial institutions Gazprombank and the Russian Agricultural Bank, customers who have a UnionPay card and own a Huawei smartphone may use their handsets to pay at contactless-enabled terminals, according to a recent Huawei press release.

Huawei Pay's rollout in Russia lays a foundation for a broader global expansion of the service in the future, Huawei said in the release.

Huawei’s operations outside of China have come under recent pressure, with several countries blocking its global expansion efforts for a variety of reasons, including security questions. Huawei’s CFO was arrested in Canada last month following U.S. allegations of Huawei violating foreign trade sanctions.
