Bango, Amazon team up for carrier payments in Japan

Amazon customers in Japan can now charge purchases to their mobile phone bill through a new deal with Bango.

Japanese consumers with a KDDI or NTT Docomo mobile phone account may add Bango carrier billing as a payment option within their Amazon account, streamlining the enrollment process by eliminating the need to enter card details, Bango said in a Tuesday press release.

Amazon purchases are completed instantly via Bango, and charges appear on the customer’s monthly mobile phone bill, which is a popular approach for online and retail payments throughout Japan, where KDDI and Docomo cover about 75% of smartphone subscribers, according to Bango.

“Internet usage in Japan is mobile-first, with billions of dollars in online purchases charged to Japanese consumers’ phone bills,” said Ray Anderson, Bango’s CEO, in the release.
