Australian telco brews coffee cup payments

Australian telecom firm Optus has added a tap-and-pay coffee cup to its expanding array of wearables leveraging Near Field Communication that link to its mobile payments app.

Optus has partnered with Frank Green, a company that makes reusable cups and bottles, to create a durable, refillable coffee cup with an NFC chip embedded inside its base that enables users to tap the cup to pay at merchants with contactless payment capabilities.

The cups, available for about US$30, support payments of up to $75.

Optus developed the payments-enabled coffee cup to enhance convenience for its customers on the go, said Ben White, an Optus marketing executive, in a press release.

Optus last year introduced a line of wearable products with NFC payments capabilities supported by its Cash by Optus mobile payments app, in conjunction with Australia's Heritage Bank Limited. Its other NFC-enabled wearables include contactless wristbands and stickers customers may attack to objects to power contactless mobile payments through its app.

“Enabling customers to add more than one accessory to their Optus Pay facility gives them the added flexibility to switch between their favorites,” White said.
