Apriva, iPayment Collaborate on EMV Software for Small Businesses

Wireless transaction and security company Apriva is pushing EMV mobile point of sale software, extending a partnership with iPayment Inc. to serve small and midsize businesses.

In offering merchants an EMV-capable mobile point of sale system, iPayment will offer its customers the white-label version of Apriva's AprivaPay Plus software, which converts Apple, Android and Amazon Fire devices into mobile points of sale.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Apriva landed a deal last year with Global Payments to release the white-label version of AprivaPay Plus to enable EMV mobile payment acceptance for Global Payments' U.S. clients. The software allows EMV chip credit and debit card acceptance, multi-user capability, language localization, two-factor authentication and device tracking for added security. Reporting features are available to merchants through an online Web portal.

The partnership also gives small merchants an option to more easily deploy EMV and avoid the fraud liability shift that took place in October 2015. At that time, the party unable to accept chip card payments became liable for fraud at the physical point of sale.

“Many small to medium sized businesses using mobile devices have not yet upgraded their payment solutions for EMV acceptance because of the general lack of availability in the marketplace," Stacey Finley Tappin, senior vice president of sales and marketing communications at Apriva, stated in an April 11 press release.

AprivaPay Plus is unique in that it has been EMV certified on multiple payment processors, Tappin added. “iPayment MobilePay now offers a low cost EMV solution to businesses that can be deployed on a wide variety of smartphones and tablets, enabling compliance for businesses of all sizes.”

Apriva is also providing the payments gateway in the U.S. for EMV hardware that attaches to unattended terminals in parking lots, car washes, vending machines and other retail kiosk settings. New York-based iPayment, which processes payments for more than 150,000 U.S. merchants, late last year was said to be contemplating various future options, including the sale of the company.
