Amex, Walmart.com partner to boost pay-with-points spending

In its push to compete more directly with Amazon, Walmart has partnered with American Express, enabling its customers to earn and burn Amex’s Membership Rewards points for e-commerce purchases on Walmart.com.

Amex is touting the connection with a promotion awarding two additional Membership Rewards points for every dollar spent (for a total of three points) when they use Amex Express Checkout on Walmart.com through Aug. 30, the companies announced Monday.

The promotion is available to Amex customers enrolled in Membership Rewards shopping online at Walmart through any browser, desktop or mobile, and via Walmart’s mobile app, according to the announcement. The process requires Amex customers to take a few precise steps, going against the broader e-commerce goal of eliminating friction.

To pay with Membership Rewards points, customers must enroll an Amex card within Walmart’s online checkout page and enter the desired dollar amount to apply to the order. To earn bonus points during the promotion, customers may select Amex Express Checkout and enter their user ID and password.

The promotion brings Amex, which for decades worked to maintain in upscale image, full circle by working with the nation's largest discount retailer.

Walmart earlier this month announced the addition of Amex veteran Janey Whiteside as its executive vice president and chief customer officer for its U.S. and e-commerce divisions.
