American Express Co. continues its move into a payments arena not often associated with the affluent customers served through the New York-based card network. It now accepts Amex card payments at gas stations commonly located in parking lots near Walmart stores.
American Express and Murphy Oil USA Inc., an international oil and gas company, have entered an agreement that enables customers to use the American Express card to pay for fuel at more than 1,100 stations in 23 states, the companies announced Dec. 19.
Amex’s agreement with Murphy Oil, which tends to establish its stations near Walmart, comes nearly two months after the card brand introduced the Bluebird prepaid card, which consumers can obtain and reload at Walmart stores.
Amex chief executive Ken Chenault expressed optimism in early December that the
Amex is hoping for the same result with the gas station agreement.
“American Express is excited to work with Murphy in bringing additional payment choices to their consumers,” Ramón Martin, president of Merchant Services Americas at American Express, stated in a press release. “We look forward to building a long lasting relationship with Murphy.”
El Dorado, Ark.-based Murphy Oil owns and operates more than 1,150 MurphyUSA and Murphy Express stores, the press release states.
