Amex links to Venmo, PayPal for splitting the bill, paying with points

American Express is adding a new dimension to its year-old partnership with PayPal by giving credit card customers more options for splitting a restaurant check and paying with loyalty points.

Amex now enables credit card customers to ping friends through the Amex mobile app via PayPal or Venmo, requesting repayment for the cost of a meal or purchase divided evenly among a group, according to a Tuesday press release.

The move would enable Amex users to accelerate points earned in Amex’s Membership Rewards loyalty program on the total purchase, versus other P2P methods.

Later this month Amex customers will be able to customize the amount requested from each person, the release said.

Amex also has enabled its customers to use Membership Rewards points to pay at any merchant that accepts PayPal, the company noted in the same release.

When paying at a merchant that accepts PayPal, Amex users will be prompted with the option to use points for purchases, Amex said.
