7-Eleven answers pandemic payment concerns with mobile wallet

To address a growing demand for contactless payment methods during the coronavirus pandemic, 7-Eleven has launched a mobile wallet for customers to use at participating U.S. stores.

7-Eleven Wallet is available through the store's app, allowing users to load funds and check out with cash, debit, credit or 7-Eleven prepaid cards, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Payments do not require the use of PIN pads.

Cash must be loaded in-store at the register, while other payment methods can be loaded into the app. 7-Eleven says it will not charge loading, transaction or interest fees.

"7-Eleven Wallet meets the needs of customers looking for convenient, contactless ways to shop and pay during this unprecedented global pandemic," Joe DePinto, president and CEO of 7-Eleven, said in a Wednesday press release. "Cash customers want to participate in the growing digital payment ecosystem, and 7-Eleven Wallet gives them access to touchless payment along with deep-value loyalty offers."

Because it operates through the store's app, 7-Eleven Wallet allows users to earn and shop with points, get offers, redeem rewards and pay in one step through the scanning of a barcode in the app.

Customers using other digital products in certain markets, like Mobile Checkout or the Fuel Loyalty Program, can also use the wallet perks.

"7-Eleven approaches every new idea focused solely on how it makes our customers' days easier," Sajjad Khan, senior director of product management at 7-Eleven, said in the release. "We are an engine of innovation, constantly pivoting and changing to offer first-of-its-kind and best-in-class solutions as customers' needs evolve."
