The convenience store chain 7-Eleven will let consumers pay bills at its stores through an app from PayNearMe.
The PayNearMe Bill Pay app will be accepted at about 8,000 stores operated by 7-Eleven in the U.S., according to a Sept. 22 news release. Consumers' payments will be handled in cash using the app, and the store will scan a bar code in the app to complete the payment.
Financial terms of the partnership between 7-Eleven and PayNearMe were not disclosed.
Consumers will able to pay about bills issued by about 17,000 national and local companies, including utilities, cable companies, insurance providers and others.
The product is targeted at underbanked consumers who have little or no access to traditional bank accounts, 7-Eleven of Dallas and PayNearMe of Sunnyvale, Calif., said in the release.
"Cash users are largely neglected in today's bank-based digital economy," Danny Shader, PayNearMe's chief executive, said in the release. "We will make it possible for everyone to benefit from the convenience of digital branches."
