Webster in Conn. Names Ciulla President, Savage Vice Chairman

Webster Financial in Waterbury, Conn., has promoted its head of commercial banking to president of Webster Bank and its holding company.

John Ciulla was named president and also named a director on Wednesday, according to a news release. He will be responsible for the $23.6 billion-asset company's community banking and marketing divisions and for Webster Private Bank. Ciulla will also retain oversight of commercial banking.

Joseph Savage, who had been president, will become executive vice chairman for both Webster Bank and holding company. Savage will remain a director and retain oversight of human resources.

Ciulla started at Webster in 2004 as senior vice president for middle market banking. He was named commercial banking head in January 2014. He previously worked at Bank of New York. Webster in March signed a noncompete and nonsolicitation agreement with Ciulla.

Savage joined Webster in 2002 and became president in January 2014. Savage will continue in his role of formulating strategy and will lead external client initiatives with Chairman and Chief Executive James Smith, the release said.
