SunTrust Adds a Techie as CMO

SunTrust Banks has a new chief marketing officer.

Susan Somersille Johnson joins the $183 billion-asset Atlanta company from NCR, where she was vice president of global marketing. Before that she was global head of customer marketing at Nokia. She holds an engineering degree from Harvard and an MBA from the Wharton School.

The hire underscores SunTrust's commitment to innovation as more customers turn to digital channels for their banking needs. SunTrust is testing video teller machines — made by NCR, it should be noted — and is experimenting with automated safety deposit box system that can be accessed using a debit card, personal identification number and hand scan. The new technology is being used in an innovation branch SunTrust opened in downtown Atlanta earlier this year.

Johnson, who started on Aug. 11, reports directly to SunTrust Chief Executive William H. Rogers. She succeeds Rilla Delorier, who earlier this year was promoted to head of consumer banking channels.
