State Street hires ex-Google, Wells Fargo executive to head compliance

State Street in Boston has plucked its new global chief compliance officer from Google.

Yvette Hollingsworth Clark, who is also a former Wells Fargo executive, is responsible for overseeing the custody bank's compliance activities across the world, State Street said in a press release. She started in the role Monday.

Hollingsworth Clark, who is based in Boston, reports to Brad Hu, global head of risk for State Street, as well as to the examining and audit committee of the company's board of directors. She succeeds Jacki Angell, who left State Street in April to pursue other opportunities, a company spokesperson said.

Hu said in the press release that Hollingsworth Clark will help State Street to strengthen its compliance and anti-money laundering organization.

"Yvette is a respected professional in compliance risk management, with a strong record of building and leading effective AML and Compliance frameworks at global financial institutions," Hu said.

Hollingsworth Clark was most recently the head of compliance for Google's consumer trust business, State Street said. Earlier, she was Wells Fargo's chief compliance officer for five years before becoming the San Francisco bank's regulatory innovation officer in 2017. In the latter role, she worked on compliance issues in connection with artificial intelligence.

She left Wells Fargo in January 2021, according to her LinkedIn profile, outlasting many senior leaders at the bank who had previously exited amid intense regulatory scrutiny of unauthorized customer accounts and other compliance issues.

Before joining Wells Fargo in 2012, Hollingsworth Clark worked at Barclays and Citigroup, and spent nearly 10 years at the Federal Reserve as a bank regulator and supervisor.

Hollingsworth Clark has been named three times — in 2015, 2016 and 2017 — to American Banker's Most Powerful Women to Watch list.
