Solidus Closes Its Pay By Touch System

The struggling Solidus Networks Inc. has shuttered its Pay By Touch biometric payments system.

The San Francisco company said Wednesday that its Pay By Touch system would stop handling consumers' payments as of midnight.

Pay By Touch let people initiate transactions at the point of sale with their fingerprints; the purchases were charged to a credit card or debited from a bank account.

Solidus filed for bankruptcy in December after falling behind on obligations such as salary and rent.

It sold its Paycheck Secure biometric payroll cashing operation this month to several executives from BioPay LLC, a rival it bought in 2006, but until this week Solidus had vowed to continue running its point of sale payment service.

Pay By Touch was used by merchants such as the grocery chain Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. and gas station chain Shell Oil Co.
