WASHINGTON —
Glenn Hubbard, a top economic advisor to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, gave a glowing endorsement of Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke on Wednesday.
In an interview with Reuters television, Hubbard said Bernanke has "done a very good job" running the central bank and applauded his efforts to navigate the financial crisis that occurred in 2008.
"You have to give Ben Bernanke and the Fed high marks for much of their actions," he said.
Hubbard's comments contrast sharply with Romney and other Republicans, who have turned critical of Bernanke since the financial crisis. In June, Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan, "I'm not saying who I would appoint to the Federal Reserve, but it's not likely to be the same person."
Bernanke was appointed by former President George W. Bush and has served two four-year terms as chairman. He was re-nominated by President Obama for a second term in 2010.
Hubbard said in the interview he would make sure Bernanke was considered for a possible third term. "I would certainly recommend that Chairman Bernanke get every consideration."
