Playing a pivotal role in compliance: Sharon Carmeli

Sharon Carmeli has served as chief compliance officer and general counsel at the business banking platform Bluevine for the past nine years, and she has been instrumental in shaping the company's legal and compliance framework, as well as its strategic direction.

At Bluevine, Carmeli has led the development of a compliance management system and overseen the implementation of policies and procedures to support Bluevine's growth. The company has grown from just 25 employees when Carmeli joined in 2015 to more than 570 today. 

Carmeli also spearheads Bluevine's public policy initiatives. She played a pivotal role in Bluevine endorsing the Small Business Financing Disclosure Act, which would require lenders to provide more transparency about credit terms for small-business loans. 

Prior to joining Bluevine, Carmeli was general counsel at Gaon Holdings, an Israeli water management company, and Tzinorot, a publicly traded company controlled by Gaon that manufacturers steel pipes. She also gained experience in international economic law by serving as general counsel for the Government of Israel Economic Mission in New York, where she led the Israeli's government's debt issuance in the U.S. market.

In 2018, she was a founding member of TechGC, a group for those serving as general counsels to share knowledge and support their peers. Carmeli is also an active member of the Women General Counsel Association, where she champions gender diversity in the legal profession. 

Reflecting on her leadership journey, Carmeli emphasizes foresight and adaptability as essential qualities for navigating the challenges facing the fintech industry. She has played a key role in embedding a compliance-first mindset into Bluevine's product development, ensuring that innovative solutions meet regulatory requirements while addressing the evolving needs of customers.
