At least four people were killed and nine more were injured in Louisville, Kentucky on Monday when an Old National Bank employee opened fire in a branch of the bank, local authorities said.
Two police officers were among nine people hospitalized following the shooting, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department. One was in critical condition. At least three patients were discharged by early Monday afternoon from University of Louisville Hospital, according to the hospital.
Police identified the gunman as Connor Sturgeon, a 23-year-old white male. Sturgeon was employed at the bank, according to Louisville Metro Police Interim Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel. She said he used a rifle to kill four people inside the bank.
Sturgeon was later killed by police, according to Gwinn-Villaroel.
Old National said on Twitter that executives, including CEO Jim Ryan, had left Old National's headquarters in Evansville, Indiana, and were en route to Louisville "in response to the tragic shooting."
The safety of Old National "employees and everyone we serve in our banking center locations is paramount," Ryan said in a statement before police identified the shooter.
"As we await more details, we are deploying employee assistance support and keeping everyone affected by this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers."
A spokeswoman for the bank and its $46 billion-asset parent Old National Bancorp was not immediately available.
Early on Monday, officers responded to reports of shots fired at the bank's branch in the Preston Pointe area of downtown Louisville, Paul Humphrey, deputy chief of the police department, said at a press conference. Police arrived around 8:30 a.m. Louisville time and, within minutes, exchanged gunfire with the suspected shooter, according to multiple local media reports.
The shootings occurred before the bank branch was scheduled to open at 9 a.m.
The shootings Monday were the latest example of gun violence impacting the banking industry. In September 2018, a gunman killed three people and seriously injured three others in and around the branch in Fifth Third Bancorp's headquarters in Cincinnati. The shooter also died in a gunfight with police.
