Harland Clarke, Profits Up, Cites Buys

The check printer Harland Clarke Holdings Corp. reported an increase in first-quarter earnings, mainly because of two acquisitions.

M&F Worldwide Corp. of New York bought John H. Harland Co. of Atlanta in May of last year, combined it with Clarke American Corp., a San Antonio check printer acquired in 2005, and renamed the business Harland Clarke Holdings.

In February, Scantron Corp., a Harland Clarke unit that offers data collection products for standardized tests, acquired Data Management I LLC.

Harland Clarke reported last week that its net income rose 41% from a year earlier, to $7.2 million, and revenue jumped 170%, to $444.5 million. More than half the revenue, $273.9 million, was generated through the two acquisitions.
