Hampton Roads in Va. Names Chairman

Hampton Roads Bancshares (HMPR) in Virginia Beach, Va., has named Charles Johnston chairman.

Johnston, 57, succeeds Henry Custis, the $2 billion-asset company announced Thursday. Custis, 67, has been chairman since 2010 and will remain on the board as chairman emeritus.

Johnston was the chief financial officer of Eastern Bank in Boston from 2003 until his retirement in March 2012. Earlier, he was CFO of Commonwealth Bancorp in Philadelphia. He joined Hampton Roads’ board in September.

In addition, James Burr, managing director at the Carlyle Group, was elected to the board, Hampton Roads said Thursday. Burr was Wachovia’s corporate treasurer before joining Carlyle in 2008. The Carlyle Group and its affiliates own just under 25% of Hampton Roads.

Hampton Roads is the holding company for Shore Bank and Bank of Hampton Roads.
