Genworth Buys Back Shares from Merrill

Genworth Financial Inc. said Friday that it has bought back 16.5 million shares of its common stock from Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. for $600 million.

The Richmond, Va., insurance holding company said that the move was part of an accelerated stock repurchase agreement that would help offset the increased number of outstanding shares that resulted from its conversion of equity units into stock on May 16, when it fell below its $1.1 billion stock repurchase plan.
