First South Bank in Washington, N.C., has replaced a small outpost with a new full service banking office in the greater Outer Banks area.

Mercantile Bank in Grand Rapids, Mich., plans to close five branches to cut costs. The $2.9 billion-asset company said in a press release Wednesday that it plans to close the branches in the first quarter.

First South Bancorp in Washington, N.C., will close three branches as part of a larger branch-restructuring plan.
The $913 million-asset company said the three branches of First South Bank, located in Kitty Hawk, Kenansville and Grantsboro, N.C., will close in February.
A company spokeswoman could not confirm the fate of the branches' employees. First South will redirect those branches' customers to nearby offices in Kill Devil Hills, Wallace and New Bern, N.C.
Additionally, First South has relocated a branch in Lumberton, N.C., to a newly constructed office. It also plans to relocate a branch in New Bern in December. First South also opened a loan production office Monday in Williamston, N.C., and it plans to convert that office to a full-service branch on Nov. 30.
Altogether after the announced changes, the bank will operate 30 branches in eastern and central North Carolina.
