First BanCorp in Puerto Rico Appoints Banking Vet as Chairman

First BanCorp. in San Juan, Puerto Rico, said it had brought on a former bank executive as its nonexecutive chairman.

The $14.1 billion-asset company said in a Thursday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it appointed Roberto Herencia to the post earlier this month. Herencia was the president and chief executive of Midwest Banc Holdings in Melrose Park, Ill., from 2009 to 2010.

Herencia is the president and CEO of BXM Holdings, a fund specializing in community bank investments. He is also a director of SKBHC Holdings LLC and its banks, AmericanWest Bank and First National Bank of Starbuck.
