The restaurant chain operator Buffets Inc. is planning to use Remote Currency Manager, an electronic safe service from Fifth Third Bancorp.
With Remote Currency Manager, merchants install safes that are connected to Fifth Third's networks and can register when funds are deposited. The customer receives credit for the deposits every business day, but is liable for the funds until they are delivered by courier to the bank, which may not occur for several days.
Fifth Third, of Cincinnati, introduced Remote Currency Manager last year. Buffets, of Eagan, Minn., operates more than 500 restaurants, including Old Country Buffet and HomeTown Buffet, in 39 states. It expects to complete installation by yearend, and would become the service's largest user.
