Capital Bank in Florida Hires Technology Chief

Capital Bank Financial (CBF) in Coral Gables, Fla., has hired a former Huntington (HBAN) executive for its top technology job.

Zahid Afzal has joined the $6.6 billion-asset Capital as chief technology and operations executive, it announced Friday. The company did not respond to a request for details on whom he replaced in those roles.

Before joining Capital, Afzal spent six years as chief information officer at the Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington. Previously he was chief information officer for Bank of America's (BAC) consumer and small-business banking division.

In October he was elected to the board of United Community Financial (UCFC) in Youngstown, Ohio.

"We are very pleased to announce that Zahid Afzal has joined our team at Capital Bank," Chairman and Chief Executive Gene Taylor said in a news release. "With his deep experience and strong leadership skills, [Afzal] will help us grow organically, improve efficiency and operate safely and soundly."

Capital Bank Financial was formed by private-equity firms to roll up smaller banks, and it did eight deals in its first two years. It conducted an initial public offering last year.
