BB&T to Add 1,700 Jobs in Greensboro, N.C.

BB&T (BBT) is adding planning a major hiring spree in its home state.

The $179 billion-asset company in Winston-Salem, N.C., said Tuesday it plans to add roughly 1,700 jobs in back-office, administrative and support functions in Greensboro. The new workers will be among 2,500 personnel BB&T expects to house in a 390,000 square-foot building near the Piedmont Triad International Airport the company has leased for the next seven years.

"The new BB&T Triad Corporate Center allows us to consolidate offices, many of which are nearing capacity, in a central location and provide space for future expansion," Chris Henson, BB&T's chief operating officer, said in a news release. "The central location of this facility to Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point make it an excellent site for our existing and future associates and underscores our commitment to the Triad."

BB&T said it neither sought nor received financial incentives from the public to take over the facility. The company said it expects to move employees to the new location starting in December.

In August, the company said it would lay off up to 365 employees of BankAtlantic as it works to integrate the recently acquired bank into its operations.
