BB&T Ices Deal for Rights to Pro Hockey Arena

BB&T Corp. (BBT) is putting its moniker on professional hockey's home in South Florida.

The $179 billion-asset bank holding company has secured the naming rights to the former BankAtlantic Center, a 20,000-seat arena that is home to the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers, as part of a 10-year agreement between BB&T and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment, which manages the facility.

The deal, announced Monday, brands the building the "BB&T Center" and calls for BB&T's name to be displayed prominently in the arena and in its electronic, print and social media. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Besides hockey, the Broward County-owned arena hosts concerts and events such as upcoming performances by "The Who" and "Disney on Ice."

In July, BB&T completed a $316 million purchase of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based BankAtlantic, which operated 80 branches in South Florida that BB&T said it expects to integrate and rebrand in the fourth quarter.

The naming rights deal adds another venue to a bevy of sports sponsorships BB&T has added its name to in recent years, including the PGA Tour's Wyndham Championship and BB&T Atlanta Open, professional soccer club FC Dallas, the NCAA's Big South Conference and NASCAR racing driver Jeff Burton's car.

It also sponsors athletics at about a dozen colleges and universities, including the University of Alabama, Auburn University and Duke.
