ABA ads praise six lawmakers, tell voters to stay engaged on issues

WASHINGTON — The American Bankers Association on Wednesday released six more political advertisements focused on incumbents in four states, bringing the total to 12 ads the group has produced before the midterm elections.

But unlike previous ads in which the group just voiced support for a candidate, the latest ads took a somewhat different approach. They praised a stand taken by the lawmaker but also urged voters to stay engaged with their representative on future legislative fights.

Among the six candidates is Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., a member of the Banking Committee locked in a tight re-election battle.

"Call Dean Heller’s office and thank him for voting for tax reform," the ad says. "Tell Senator Heller to keep fighting the good fight. Make our tax cuts permanent. Because when our economy is stronger, Nevada is stronger."

The other five ads focus on House members: Reps. Andy Barr, R-Ky., Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., Vicente Gonzàlez, D-Texas, Will Hurd, R-Texas, and Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla. The ads underscore certain legislative issues important to banks and their ability to serve communities and sustain the broader U.S. economy, the ABA said in a press release.

“Our new advertising initiative marks the next major step forward for ABA's political engagement,” said Rob Nichols, the head of ABA. "These ads draw attention to legislative issues that are critical to banks and the customers they serve across the country. They will help ensure that key lawmakers hear their voice.”

The ads were developed in partnership with state banking associations.

In April, the organization announced it would be independently funding ads in support of political candidates for the first time. The group previously released ads backing six incumbents: Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., and Reps. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, Jeff Denham, R-Calif., Lou Correa, D-Calif., French Hill, R-Ark., and Ted Budd, R-N.C.
