SAN DIEGO-Maintaining the Intranet for a $200-million credit union is more than one man can handle, especially when it is built from scratch.
But Miramar Federal Credit Union CEO Max Paul, along with one executive from human resources, was compelled to do just that until the credit union implemented Banc Intranets' BancWorks platform.
Miramar has seen rapid growth over the past few years and Paul's accumulating responsibilities left him unable to act as caretaker for an antiquated system. For those reasons and others, Miramar FCU is being recognized with a Credit Union Journal Best Practices 2008 Award.
"As so many changes took place I just didn't have time to do all of that stuff. So I looked for something that the managers themselves could do," he said.
Now each department has control of its section of the network, and employees in HR, IT, lending and other segments can post documents, create presentations and send messages to one another with ease.
Everything from interoffice communication to timesheets to the employee handbook is available every time an employee logs on to a terminal.
The payoff in efficiency, Paul said, is tremendous and the network also cuts down on the amount of paperwork circulating through the office.
"What they are doing specifically with our products is basically getting rid of a lot of the internal paper that goes across the institution," said Banc Intranets' Vice President of Sales and Marketing David Daniel. "From an employee efficiency perspective and a green initiative we thought that was outstanding for a relatively small credit union."
Paul and other executives are also able to get feedback from the rest of Miramar's staff much more quickly through Intranet-based employee surveys and top levels of management are able to communicate far more effectively and consistently through the portal system.
In the current turbulent financial world, delivering a consistent message from top management through the rest of staff and subsequently to members, especially about the security and safety of funds at credit unions, is absolutely essential, the credit union said.
From top to bottom organizationally they are very tech savvy," Daniel said of Miramar FCU. "A lot of banks look at an Intranet as a luxury, but once it gets implemented it truly becomes a mission critical application."
