LANSING, Mich. The Brighton Township Planning Commission on Monday night signed off on a site plan for Lake Trust CU’s new 100,000-square-foot office project, which would be one of the biggest credit union builds in the country.
The $30-million headquarters is proposed to be built on a hilly, wooded area off U.S. Route 23 and will preserve 41% of the site’s natural features, including a line of trees along Old U.S. 23.
A team of architects and engineers hired by the $1.6-billion credit union told planning commissioners their goal was to avoid disturbing the natural features as much as possible. The plan is to break ground on the project in March and move into the facility in summer 2015.
The new headquarters will combine workers split between offices in Lansing and Plymouth and initially house 240 employees. Lake Trust was created by the 2010 merger of NuUnion CU and Detroit Edison CU.
