At Least One Branch Destroyed By Oklahoma Tornadoes

MOORE, Okla. — With credit unions, their employees and members in this Oklahoma City suburb digging out this morning from the devastation caused by tornadoes here, Credit Union Journal has learned that at least one credit union office has been destroyed. FAA Credit Union said a branch of Tinker FCU has been leveled by the storm, which had winds estimated at up to 200 miles per hour.

Representatives of Tinker FCU could not be reached for contact. The facility, at 400 SW 6th St., was staffed at the time the storm destroyed the branch. As Credit Union Journal was first to report, its employees rode out the storm in the safety of the branch's vault.

Alison Wolf, VP of marketing at FAA told CU Journal that according to reports she received the Tinker office was totally destroyed. "The storm missed us by several blocks, and our employees took cover in our vault."

FAA CU is formulating plans now for helping members who have been affected by the tornado. Wolf said she was aware of a number of members whose homes suffered damage, some total losses.

The Credit Union Association of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, reported that it was not aware of any other credit unions outside of the Tinker branch sustaining damage as of yesterday. CEO Gary Jones said these tornadoes are a way of life in his state. "One of our staff members said he saw one funnel cloud go right over his home. That is not unusual here, and I can't recall just how many tornadoes I have seen in my life."

The league has sent e-mails to CUs in this state letting them know the Oklahoma Credit Union Foundation has disaster relief grants available.
