Work-life lessons from the pandemic lockdowns inspired these credit unions to cater to the needs of remote workers and those who have returned to (or never left) the office.
In total, 55 institutions were ranked in our annual Best Credit Unions to Work For. (The list was formerly produced by Credit Union Journal, which is now part of American Banker.) From providing stipends for home office expenses to increased access to telehealth visits to safely bringing employees back to the office, these credit union executives placed employees’ needs first.
While credit unions have always offered interesting and fun perks to employees, over the last year these enticements were revamped.
Certain credit unions incentivized employees to get vaccinated with a $150 gift, while others offered new telecommunication policies allowing employees the option to work remotely on a permanent basis. In an effort to make the return to the office more hospitable, some credit unions allowed employees to bring their dogs to work regularly, while others returned to fun competitions like crazy sock day and ugly sweater contests.
Virtual bingo. Trivia nights. Virtual book clubs. Scavenger hunts. You name it — these credit unions took many steps to ensure that employees felt connected. Those employees who did return to the office enjoyed once again the camaraderie of annual events like summer picnics and award luncheons. Other credit unions took employees on fun day trips to places like Universal Studios, while others encouraged staff to take lunchtime hikes and volunteer in the communities they serve by planting trees on Arbor Day.
The following cardshow provides snapshots of the Best Credit Unions to Work For and specific highlights of how each has gone the extra mile to boost employee morale and preserve its organizational culture.

An earlier version of this cardshow overstated the asset size of Nusenda Credit Union in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and included the wrong photo in the card for Community Choice Credit Union in Johnston, Iowa.
