N.Y. State Banking Regulator Picks New Top Lawyer

A former staff attorney with New York's city government has been named the top lawyer for the New York State Department of Financial Services.

The department named Celeste Koeleveld general counsel, according to a Tuesday news release. The New York banking regulator's general counsel position has been vacant since Daniel Alter resigned in February 2015, to become general counsel for the bitcoin exchange itBit, according to Bitcoin magazine.

Koeleveld will report to Maria Vullo, the agency's acting superintendent.

Koeleveld had been an executive assistant corporation counsel with the New York City Law Department since 2008. She is also a former chief of the criminal division with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.
