National Wear Your Apron Day, celebrated on the Monday after Mother's Day, is not a good reason to close a bank. But at Somerset Trust Co., the occasion is worth marking. Apron Day is among several excuses the bank has used to hold customer and staff appreciation events throughout the year. Others include Dairy Month, Iced Tea Day, Root Beer Float Day and National Pet Week, during which the bank ran slideshows of pet photos on its intranet.
Somerset Trust operates 16 branches in southwestern Pennsylvania and is headed by the fifth generation of the family that founded it in 1889. The bank's president, G. Henry Cook, a great-great-grandson of the bank's founder, lends his name to a popular recognition program, the "Oh Henry" award. The program encourages employees to recognize peers that go above and beyond. Winners receive $50 and an Oh Henry candy bar. Another program, By George, is named for former president George S. Cook. Employees who do something extra to boost the bank's bottom line are awarded $100 and recognized by the bank's president.
