Smartphones will drive more than $730 billion worth of purchases over the next five years, according to Juniper Research.
The U.K. firm said in a report released this month that these mobile payments are increasing even now.
"Transaction growth will be driven by the increasing scale of real-world (nondigital) purchases from major brands and retailers," Juniper said in a press release. "Companies such as Domino's in the US and Argos in the UK already seeing 6-7% of all sales occurring via the mobile channel."
The firm found that as a result of the development of this "couch commerce" trend, mobile and nomadic devices would account for 30% of "e-retail" within five years. But it also said that such transactions would continue to constitute a small minority of a global retail sales marketplace currently worth more than $16 trillion.
