Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA has named a long-time insider to oversee its retail banking operations in the United States.
The Madrid company said Monday that Manolo Sanchez now is the president and chief executive of BBVA Compass. Mr. Sanchez, 43, succeeded Garrett Hegel, who had been the unit's chief executive since January.
A company spokesman said that Mr. Hegel, 58, retired after completing a "charge to get us through the integration" of three Texas banks onto the platform of Compass Bancshares Inc., which BBVA bought last year.
Mr. Sanchez was the executive vice president of community banking at BBVA Compass. He has also been the chief risk officer at BBVA Bancomer and worked in BBVA's corporate bank.
"Manolo brings a great wealth of knowledge and experience, having served in a number of senior management positions in his 18-year career at BBVA," Jose Maria Garcia Meyer, BBVA Compass' chairman, said in a prepared statement.
Mr. Meyer said that Mr. Sanchez's experience as chief risk officer "will also serve us well, given the current credit environment."
